Read the relevant KJV passage
1 Timothy 5:4But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
Compare the evidence
Paul speaks sharply about providing for one's own household. Read with verse 4, this concerns the care of family members in a passage about widows.
1 Timothy 5:8But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Galatians urges doing good to all, with special attention to the household of faith. The priority does not erase responsibility beyond one’s household.
Galatians 6:10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
What the context adds
The saying is absent as a sentence from the KJV, yet 1 Timothy 5 has a real discussion about care for widows and obligations within a family. Verse 4 addresses children and nephews; verse 8 speaks sharply about failing to provide for one’s own. That is a concrete pastoral and community question, not a universal command to reserve all generosity for relatives. Galatians 6:10 widens the lens by naming both “all men” and a household of faith. Reading the two passages together tests the common assumption that charity must stop where family ends.
A source for the saying
Thomas Browne uses “Charity begins at home” in Religio Medici, Part II, Section 4, and calls it “the voice of the world”; this attests the saying without claiming he invented it. Read Browne, Religio Medici, Part II, Section 4 ↗
