Read the relevant KJV passage

Genesis 3:6

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Compare the evidence

The woman refers to the fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden. She does not give the fruit a species or name.

Genesis 3:3

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

The earlier command names the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The focus is the prohibition, not a botanical description.

Genesis 2:17

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

What the context adds

Genesis 3:6 says the woman saw the tree was good for food, took its fruit, ate, and gave some to her husband. Neither that verse nor the earlier command says “apple.” The story gives many concrete details—the conversation with the serpent, the command, the eating, and the discovery afterward—so the missing fruit name is easy to overlook. Art and retellings may choose an apple to make the scene recognizable. That picture should remain a picture rather than a claim that Genesis supplied the detail. Genesis never identifies the fruit by species, even as it describes the choice and its consequences in detail.

A question to carry forward

Which details about the fruit does Genesis give, and which details are supplied by familiar pictures?
