Psalms 121:2

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Compare the evidence

Paul says Christ died for the ungodly “when we were yet without strength.” That counters the assumption that divine help begins only after self-sufficiency.

Romans 5:6

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Proverbs commends diligence through the ant. It gives a real biblical theme to compare without turning the popular saying into a verse.

What the context adds

This is a useful example of a sentence that sounds scriptural because it combines a genuine concern for diligence with an unsupported condition on God’s help. Psalm 121 speaks of help coming from the LORD; it does not say the helper waits for people to prove they can manage alone. Romans 5:6 points especially sharply in the other direction by describing help while people are without strength. Proverbs 6:6–11 shows why the other half of the discussion matters: laziness is also addressed in Scripture. The careful finding is about the quoted sentence, not a claim that effort or responsibility is never valued.

Poor Richard’s Almanack for 1736, published by Benjamin Franklin, prints “God helps them that help themselves.” This is an attested later form, not a claim that Franklin invented the idea. Read Poor Richard, 1736 ↗
