A familiar Bible saying, checked in context

Jonah was swallowed by a whale

Real verse, wider context

Jonah 1:17 names “a great fish,” without naming its species. Matthew 12:40 uses “the whale’s belly” in the KJV when Jesus recalls Jonah.

Read the relevant KJV passage

Jonah 1:17

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Compare the evidence

Jonah prays from the fish’s belly in the next chapter. The narrative continues to call the creature a fish.

Jonah 2:1

Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

Jesus’ comparison moves from Jonah’s time inside the creature to the response of the people of Nineveh.

Matthew 12:41

The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

What the context adds

Jonah 1:17 says a “great fish” was prepared, and Jonah 2:1 calls its location the fish’s belly. Matthew 12:40 is why a simple “the Bible never says whale” verdict would mislead KJV readers: Jesus’ comparison uses “the whale’s belly.” The two KJV passages use different English words while referring to Jonah’s story. Matthew’s argument is about a sign and the Son of man, not a zoological identification of the animal. The wording difference calls for reading Jonah and Matthew together. A confident claim about species would go beyond what these passages set out to tell us.

A question to carry forward

What is the point of Jonah’s fish in his narrative, and what point does Jesus make by recalling it?
